  • Alert: Thefts Ongoing in the Community

    Hi all,

Regrettably there has been a series of thefts recently in the community, and I am posting this to let everyone know in particular those who are not active on the Nmbngee Facebook or Whatsapp groups (please email or call Max or a board member if you wish to be added to those)

This started a couple of months ago and settles down once discoveries are made but then starts again once the kerfuffle dies down.

Feel free to contact a board member for more details as we discuss what to do about this. Complicating factors are that the offenders in most cases have proven to be certain children resident on the community. I don’t want to get into more details than that on this public a forum. What I want to do is just make sure all members are aware that thefts are ongoing and to take measures to secure your homes and valuables.

I will post more later after more in person discussions.

  • ** THEFT ALERT **

It has been raised with the board that there has been a number of thefts and trespassing into shareholders private residences on Nmbngee in the past weeks and months. Typically, the items reported as being stolen are of value. While the board cannot resolve these issues directly, it is helpful to notify us so we can keep the community informed.

Theft can happen anywhere, but staying informed and taking precautions can help keep all community members safe. There are a few basic things you can consider doing to protect yourself and your property.

    1. Secure Your Home – Lock doors and windows, install outdoor lighting, and consider security cameras.
    2. Be Mindful of Valuables – Keep valuables out of sight in vehicles and homes. Avoid leaving bags or valuables unattended in easy to access spaces.
    3. Stay Vigilant – Report suspicious activity to the board and alert neighbours if you notice anything unusual. We have a number of non-shareholder residents on the community, that said, if you don’t recognize someone, record their license plate as it may be helpful in the future.

By working together, Nmbngee can deter crime and foster a safer environment for everyone. Stay safe and stay connected!

EMERGENCY WARNING: Horseshoe Creek Rd Fire (Kyogle LGA) – Seek Shelter – Upper Horseshoe Creek  2023-10-16 17:19

    Posted: 2023-10-16 17:19

A fire is burning in the Upper Horseshoe Creek area, 11km north east of Kyogle. The fire has burnt more than 64ha and is being controlled.

    Current situation

    • The fire is burning in the vicinity of Horseshoe Creek Rd and Sargents Rd.
    • The fire is currently 64 hectares in size and is being controlled.
    • Fire activity has increased across the fireground with the fire moving in multiple directions.
    • Firefighters are working to protect properties in the area.

    What you need to do

    • If you are in the areas of Sargents Rd, Horseshoe Creek Rd, and Wainwrights Rd, your life is at risk. It is too late to leave.

    Barkers Vale

    • If you are in Barkers Vale in the areas of Twin Pines Road and Williams Rd and your plan is to leave, or you are not prepared, leave now.
    • Leave towards Kyogle travelling south along Williams Rd.
    • A safer location may include a well cleared area nearby. Neighbourhood safer places offer a place of last resort if there are no other options.
    • Wear protective clothing and footwear.
    • If you planned to visit the area, or live in the area but are away from home, it is not safe to return.

If you are threatened by fire

    • Shelter in a room on the other side of the building from the approaching fire, and one that has water and a clear exit out of the house.
    • Keep moving away from the fire if possible and if your building catches fire, go to an area within the building which has already burnt.
    • Monitor both inside and outside for small fires and burning embers and turn sprinklers on if you have them.
    • Be careful outdoors after the fire has passed as trees can be unstable and fall.
    • If your life is at risk, call Triple Zero (000).

  • Emergency Preparedness Workshops – Lillifield

INVITATION TO NMBNGEE MEMBERS FROM LILLIFIELD TO ATTEND THE FOLLOWING FREE WORKSHOPS

My name is Jeanette Dal Santo from the Lillifield Community and we would like to invite members of your community to the following events.

Free Event Number 1  Disaster Management & Co-ordinated Evacuation. Targeting the concerns of communities regarding emergency management. Our objective is to discuss how we can work together within Lillifield and as you are our neighbours to assist each other in an emergency (flood & fire) until Emergency Services arrive.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 2nd November commencing 5pm-7pm. Lillifield Community Centre. To make it as much a social and relaxed event we are having a ‘Pot Luck’ meeting and ask if everyone would bring a plate to share
The meeting will be headed by Tammy and Jazmin Jones who are the facilitators of Community-led Resilient teams across the Northern Rivers. They are quiet amazing women who are trained and dedicated to the safety and security of communities.  They assist communities in meeting their disaster management needs.
The initial discussion will include (but not limited to):-
    ·        What is important to your community?
    ·        Identifying local risks.
    ·        Learning from past experiences.
    ·        Keeping the vulnerable safe.
    ·        Coordinating emergency response. (I see this final point as very relevant to both Lillifield and Nmbngee as we are near neighbours and it would be so important for both communities to have a coordinated response to evacuation – e.g., use of exit through Lillifield and shelter in our Community Centre which we are working to equip as a ‘safe haven’ etc).
We are inviting the Principal from Barkesvale as the school too could be a safe haven for members of both communities should they not evacuate early enough from their homes. An invite has been extended to the Rock Valley Hamlet Community who have said their representatives will be attending to develop their disaster strategies.
Free Event Number 2  What to do Until the Ambulance ArrivesSunday  30th October 9.30am-12.30am  Lillifield Community Centre
This is a more in-depth workshop facilitated by a Paramedic. Lillifield has formed a team to attend any medical emergency on Lillifield until services can arrive.
Most of the team did attend our August workshop but wanted more training specifically targeting longer time frame management.  Whilst our August workshop was great, as a former trainer for St. John Ambulance, I felt there were a number of first aid scenarios that needed a little more attention especially for rural and remote communities.
We are again extending an invite to Nmbgnee members to attend this workshop. It would be an ideal opportunity for those who could not attend our first workshop and for those who like ourselves wish to know more first aid protocols.
If your community members are interested in these workshops, please contact me.
Mobile phone 0447 012887 (please send me a text)
  • Creek Clean Up

Last Sunday Nmbngee held a community work day. A solid crew turned up to get stuck into the Privet and Lantana along the creek bed winding back from the Western side of the front creek crossing. A lot was achieved and people were keen to make this a regular thing.

The area where the weeding took place is circled in yellow
  • BY LAW Updates

At the last SGM it was decided to update the Poisons section of the by-laws. Previously it was possible under the by-laws to seek permission to use round up, however members decided we no longer felt it was appropriate to use round up or glyphosate related products. Further to that, members decided that no herbicides should be used on Nmbngee.

Pesticides were considered okay in necessary cases (such as white ants).

By Laws 16a and 16b, “No chemicals (i.e. pesticides, herbicides, etc.) are to be used without permission from a Directors’ meeting” and “That the use of Roundup (using cut and paint method) be approved for the removal of groundsel, camphor laurel and privet” respectively, were removed and replaced with a sole rule “No synthetic (chemical) herbicides are to be used on Nmbngee”.

You can view and download the new By-Laws document here: https://nmbngee.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/BY-LAWS.pdf

You can view and download the minutes confirming this change here: https://nmbngee.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/20220703-SGM-Minutes.pdf

  • Facebook and Whatsapp are Offline Worldwide

    Dear Nmbngeeians

Whatsapp (and Facebook/Instagram) are suffering a world wide outage at the moment, so if you rely on the whatsapp Gabal Road group (or for communicating with other groups/friends) you will need to resort to text messaging for the time being (or other apps, Signal for example)

Facebook made a boo boo, or to the more conspiracy minded, the finger might be pointed at “bad actors”, or maybe a large anti-western Asian country? (Though in this case, the likely cause is just a mistaken BGP update). But the end result is that Facebook, and by extension whatsapp and Instagram, or offline, worldwide.

  • How to do Census

Census time has come around again! Of course the Aus government is completely unable to deal with the fact there are 30 separate households on our community and sent ONE census form to the whole community!

Good news is that if you plan to give the government your info (I support doing so, but also this government’s record on cyber security is up shit creek so make of that what you will) you can do the census online or order your own paper form. So no one should attempt to fill out the ONE census form we received on behalf of all members. Far better we each do our own.

If you want to do the form online, go here and click “Get a Census number” and follow the prompts:
    https://www.census.abs.gov.au/census-login

If you want you can order a paper form or pick one up from a “local Census Hub”. See details here: https://www.census.abs.gov.au/doing/paper-form#order-form

  • Brian and Helen are Selling their Shares and Site Improvements (dwellings and other improvements)

As per by laws, Brian and Helen are offering their shares and site improvements for sale first to existing shareholders and then to other buyers if no existing shareholder is interested.

Contact Brian or Helen for details.

  • 2020 AGM Postponement

Hoping everyone and your loved one’s are well and staying safe from Covid-19!

AGM Postponement: This year the Office of Fair Trading has informed cooperatives that postponement of AGM’s this year due to Covid-19 is allowed, and that it is not necessary to seek official approval. So the board has elected to postpone this year’s AGM until next year. The board agreed to this measure due to the concerns that broad based participation in an AGM would not be possible even given social distancing measures.

Director positions will carry over until the AGM 2021, however anyone with concerns about the current positions or who would like to stand for or vote on Director positions before the AGM next year should contact the Board with your concerns.

You have been emailed or posted (depending on your previous preference for receiving correspondence) your ASF and Levy status current as of the 11th June 2020. Please check your email and junk mail folder if you haven’t received those emails yet. No member is facing 2 year inactive status at this time.

I have prepared a mid year report and have posted both the mid year report and the End of Year 2019 report in the meeting section of this website.

  • Alert: Fires In Area!

    Dear fellow Nmbngians

As many of you are no doubt aware, there is a serious fire burning atop the Nightcap Ranges. Smoke is filling the Nimbin Valley and residents of Tuntable and Terania valleys are being urged to evacuate.

Tuntable and Terania Residents without alternative places to stay can camp for free at Nimbin Showgrounds (for Tuntable residents) and the Channon (for Terania Creek residents).

At this point Nmbngee is not in the firing line, but we must be vigilant for fires in the area and keep on the guard. There may also be the danger of airborne cinders from the Nightcap fires, especially if the fires spread to the Newton Road ridge.

Contact Ross, Chris or Bob if you see any fires on or near Nmbngee. These three are the designated First Responders for the Nmbngee community and will contact anyone else who needs to be contacted.

There is an emergency meeting in Nimbin Town Hall today at 4pm for those interested in offering assistance or being better informed.
