• Letter to Nmbngee Residents from CCC (re Radio Network)

    Dear Nmbngee Residents.

I am writing to inform your community of the good news that Creative Communities Connect Inc has secured $10,000 grant money for a 50-watt commercial repeater.  This repeater will enable us not only to transmit to our Fixed radio operators across our Emergency Response Communities with more clarity and audio ability but will enable a broader community connection; e.g. Nimbin, and surrounds and possibly through to outskirts of Kyogle and Casino. The repeater will be an integral part of the relay communications up through the Tweed Region. Emergency Services will also be able to use this repeater as a back up to their resources.

Our Regional Fire Service has informed me that they are deeply concerned regarding the forecast for the following 2 Summers.  High temperatures over extended periods are forecast.  So please prepare your properties and most importantly have your ‘fire ready’ evacuation plan on hand and the infrastructure for that in place as summer approaches.

Nmbngee Community has received 8 hand-held radios and a fixed radio with antenna (collectively valued at approx. $1640) through our FRRR funding body. This was a significant amount and Creative Communities Connect is accountable for the correct use of these resources.  Max Riethmuller has done a great job as the fixed radio operator for your community.  And we want to continue to support him with the radio component of your safety and communications before, during and post an emergency event. We therefore, urge you to again take up the preparedness in communication by monthly (and perhaps bio monthly call outs).  It is not just a matter of putting your radios on when an imminent emergency is looming. Things can ‘go wrong’ with your radio and if you don’t know how to correct the problem you are left without information that could save your life and those within your household at the time when it is most needed.  We cannot always rely on conventional main stream media to keep us up to date.  We know from past experience that communities have been left to fend for themselves and a community that is well-equipped with plans in place is more likely to come through such times.

Please note these hand-helds are not yours to keep but handed to you on condition that you use them and practice as a community with your monthly call-outs. If you would no longer like to be part of this essential communications team, please return these radios intact through your Secretary or an assigned member of your community to our Non-for-profit group.  We have had many requests for radios from those who wish to prepare before, during and after a major emergency event. And your returned radio would be given out to another recipient who will be willing to use them appropriately.

Creative Communities Connect will be having ‘Get Ready’ & radio training sessions commencing early September and will inform your community of these dates.  We hope to meet you all and together prepare for the summers ahead.

In this topsy turvy global environment It is even more apparent that communities like yours are gems. Nmbngee has a long history of folks who had vision and the grunt to build a sustainable innovative lifestyle.  Multiple Occupancy communities have the capacity to be relatively independent and community ‘connectedness’ is the corner stone of their continued ability to embrace their original foundations of folks who want to think and live a safe and sustainable lifestyle.  Let’s meet our challenges ahead by working together in unity and understanding that we are responsible for our own and our neighbour’s well-being within our community.

    Thanking you.

    Yours in good faith.

    Jeanette Dal Santo

On behalf of Creative Communities Connect Inc.

  • Workday Mainhouse 7 June

At the last AGM members agreed to hold a work day around the Main House on Sunday June 7th, 10.00 a.m

The goal for this workday is to clear around the mainhouse as much as possible in order to remove pathways for white ants.

Bring tools, refreshments, food, entertainment, multidimensional portals (wait did I say that out loud?), or anything you think will help the day be successful and enjoyable.

    Hope to see you there!

  • 2025 AGM – Date and Agenda Items Request

The date has been set for the AGM:
    Date: 25 May 2025
    Time: 10am
    Place: Mainhouse

    Call for Agenda Items
To streamline the budgeting process, we are calling for budget requests in advance of the AGM. This will allow the board to have a budget ready in advance and streamline the budget discussion.

Please have agenda items and budget requests submitted to the Board by end of 7 May 2025. The final agenda will be published via the website by 10 May 2025.

Our past two AGMs have been very long. In order to run an efficient AGM, items must be submitted in advance. This is to provide all community members ample time to review the items and any supporting documentation, to formulate comments, questions or concerns thus allowing all members a chance to be informed and involved in the discussion. Further, comments from members will be kept to a strict two-minute limit during discussion.

Time permitting, we may consider items tabled during the AGM, however this is not guaranteed.

    How to Submit Agenda Items
Agenda items can be submitted to any board member or by emailing secretary@nmbngee.org. Alternatively, agenda items can be submitted by post to PO Box 20376, Nimbin NSW 2480. Please allow for delivery time to ensure the Board receives the agenda items on or before the 7 May 2025.

Additionally, if you have supporting documents which you wish the community to consider supporting your agenda item, please also include them with your agenda item submission so this material can be submitted to all community members, in advance, at the time of publishing the agenda.

    ASF Reminder
ASF notices have been sent out over the past weeks. As a reminder, in order to vote on open items during the AGM, you must have your ASF paid in full before the start of the AGM. As is typical, our treasurer will be able to accept cash payments on the morning of the AGM. If you have questions, please reach out to Max (or trusty treasurer).

  • CREST Radio Training Session

10am-12 noon, 17th November, Lillifield Community Hall

This is for anyone who has a UHF handset.

This is the information from Jeanette:

    Hi There!

    Next session:   Sunday 17th November 2024 – Lillifield Community Centre 9.45 (for 10am start) – 12noon

Last session for 2024. CREST will not be present at this meet-up but I’m sure we will be well able to share our insights in a team discussion.

If possible please bring a small plate to share for morning tea.  We no longer have $$$ in the grant for lunch etc.

Janet ran a successful get together for her handheld Lillian Rock road recipients last week and also invited others from the neighbourhood

Areas that came up at the Lillian Rock event for us to discuss included:-

‘ways forward’ i.e. do we want to be only a radio network or do we want to look at extending our outreach for

‘after disaster’ networks.  If so, what do we require? Distribution of workload etc etc.

We were offered a caravan for storage but alas no safe place to store the caravan. And outfitting the caravan would require that we seriously look at who

will or has the skills as a team to do this.

Please note our FRRR  & NAB grants are to be acquitted on the 18th November and we would be eligible to go for a grant for the above or anything else

we feel we may require to keep up the proficiency of the Wadeville & Surrounds Emergency Response Teams.

    1) One major point brought forward was preparedness around our homes and what needs to be attended to when we post (as per our signage)

    Advice

    Watch & Act

    Emergency Warning

I know most of you have the RFS

‘Get Ready’ booklet – but it still would be good to have a quick overview of this.

    2) Other points that may need our attention.

    * Qualifications &  Resources throughout the community/ies,  Have we noted at that and shared with each other

    * Do we have/need street coordinator/s?

    * Addresses and contacts of our hand-held recipients if they decide to leave?  This would save time as we gather leave or stay info over the radio,

    * Contacting via ‘group callout’ our Fixed Operators and also our other hand-held recipients. Have we prepared that yet?

    * Do we have backups?

    * Residents signage ‘Stay or Go’ have they been informed and have they been prepared ?

    * Where is our nearest evacuation centre and if we can’t get there what are our alternatives?  I will be seeing Kelly Pittaway about this before the meeting..

Please ask your handheld recipients and back ups OR anyone on your road etc who may be interested to attend this training session. The more informed we are

the better we will coordinate things in an emergency.

Many handheld recipients have not received their training manuals. The cost is $5.00. A receipt is issued.

If they won’t come to a meeting. Perhaps it’s worth a friendly personal call around to them and if possible bring the money so we can attend to this.

It’s really important we get these out – especially to those who won’t come to training and who regularly miss their monthly call-outs.

This money will be part of the ‘kitty’ for the community.  Especially for hand-outs etc.

Stationery is becoming very expensive, especially ink and paper.

I think that’s about all for now.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want any clarification on the above.

    Cheers

    Jeanette,

Yesterday, we took a gaggle of kids and adults (kids at heart) out to the big dog tree where we enjoyed a picnic and climbing fest. The kids learnt about the native plants and about the effects of flooding on the environment.

Another Nmbngee group photo which may or may not be an AGM photo. To be honest we didn’t need an excuse for a groupie (like a selfie but for a group)

This one was one of our more interesting AGM’s. Just joking, it was for a Mainhouse Fancy Dress party!

  • Emergency Preparedness Workshops – Lillifield

INVITATION TO NMBNGEE MEMBERS FROM LILLIFIELD TO ATTEND THE FOLLOWING FREE WORKSHOPS

My name is Jeanette Dal Santo from the Lillifield Community and we would like to invite members of your community to the following events.

Free Event Number 1  Disaster Management & Co-ordinated Evacuation. Targeting the concerns of communities regarding emergency management. Our objective is to discuss how we can work together within Lillifield and as you are our neighbours to assist each other in an emergency (flood & fire) until Emergency Services arrive.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 2nd November commencing 5pm-7pm. Lillifield Community Centre. To make it as much a social and relaxed event we are having a ‘Pot Luck’ meeting and ask if everyone would bring a plate to share
The meeting will be headed by Tammy and Jazmin Jones who are the facilitators of Community-led Resilient teams across the Northern Rivers. They are quiet amazing women who are trained and dedicated to the safety and security of communities.  They assist communities in meeting their disaster management needs.
The initial discussion will include (but not limited to):-
    ·        What is important to your community?
    ·        Identifying local risks.
    ·        Learning from past experiences.
    ·        Keeping the vulnerable safe.
    ·        Coordinating emergency response. (I see this final point as very relevant to both Lillifield and Nmbngee as we are near neighbours and it would be so important for both communities to have a coordinated response to evacuation – e.g., use of exit through Lillifield and shelter in our Community Centre which we are working to equip as a ‘safe haven’ etc).
We are inviting the Principal from Barkesvale as the school too could be a safe haven for members of both communities should they not evacuate early enough from their homes. An invite has been extended to the Rock Valley Hamlet Community who have said their representatives will be attending to develop their disaster strategies.
Free Event Number 2  What to do Until the Ambulance ArrivesSunday  30th October 9.30am-12.30am  Lillifield Community Centre
This is a more in-depth workshop facilitated by a Paramedic. Lillifield has formed a team to attend any medical emergency on Lillifield until services can arrive.
Most of the team did attend our August workshop but wanted more training specifically targeting longer time frame management.  Whilst our August workshop was great, as a former trainer for St. John Ambulance, I felt there were a number of first aid scenarios that needed a little more attention especially for rural and remote communities.
We are again extending an invite to Nmbgnee members to attend this workshop. It would be an ideal opportunity for those who could not attend our first workshop and for those who like ourselves wish to know more first aid protocols.
If your community members are interested in these workshops, please contact me.
